I'm so excited to have a spot in Afton's newsletter! She sat next to me at my very first book signing. This was just last year at Romanticon 2013, and the two of us were right in front of the entrance, so we got to meet lots of readers. I so enjoyed talking with another writer of erotic romance with interracial couples. I think we were both still in the planning stages of our Jamaican romances — the stories, of course. How cool to see both our stories out at about the same time!

Jamaica is, I think, a tremendously underserved setting for interracial romances. The beautiful island is a model of diversity. In addition to the British who eventually colonized the place, large populations of Chinese people, native Arawak Indians, people from India, and Africans have called Jamaica home. A quick study of Jamaican history also reveals a Jewish community, as well as many Scottish indentured servants. With so many different races, nationalities and ethnicities in Jamaica, it's very easy to imagine couples coming together to share, explore, and finally join cultures. Jamaica's past might have been built on divisions meant to keep people apart, but that sort of thing has never been victorious when two people fall in love.

I couldn't resist the urge to tweak Jamaican history just a bit when I wrote my short story, "Turnabout Day." I made mechanized sugarcane harvesting a fact of Jamaican life a little early. The ornery machines bring Chloe Newton, the mistress of her family's sugarcane estate, back to Peter Darrow, the man who left Jamaica as an indentured servant but returned as an engineer. Chloe and Peter have some history together; memories of a childhood kiss have kept them both warm for years. But now their attraction has grown into something a little less innocent. "Turnabout Day" is a sexy role-reversal story, revealing what happens when the lady of the manor learns to take orders from her former servant. It's as hot as a Jamaican summer — but much, much shorter!
